The Story Behind the Shots

Shooting Michigan vs Notre Dame Hockey Big Ten Tournament

Michigan vs Notre Dame Hockey – best out of 3 in the Big Ten Tournament– at Yoste Ice Arena. These two teams always have tight games and I was expecting nothing less. These two games did not disappoint! (Michigan won on March 8 and 9, 2024).

In game one, I had a hole for the first period of the game where Michigan was on offense. That was great. Than I had a hole for ½ of the third period with Michigan’s Defense. In game 2, I did not have access to a hole at all. That was not great but I tried to find the best glass that I could and shoot with the lens that I’ve come to love in these situations – the Sony 135 F1.8. While there is no comparison between a shot through the hole and a shot through glass, the Sony 135 F1.8 lens is the best I’ve seen at shooting through the glass. While I also shot some through the glass with the Canon R3 and RF 24-105 F4 (for some variety), I still prefer the look of the 135 lens.

Here, for example, is a shot of Seamus Casey through the glass (shot with the Sony 135 F1.8 lens):

The sharpness difference is easy to see.  But the above shot through the glass is, IMO, as good as you can get because of preparation and technique.  For example, you need to shoot as close to parallel to the glass as you can.  If you don’t do this, here is what you can get:

Here are a few of my favorite photos from both games:

On this shot of Garrett Schifsky, it was obviously through the hole!  Very talented player who had one goal in this game and had 15 during the regular season:

Definitely shot through the glass but I love the celebration:

While shooting these next two shots I was thinking of Russia vs USA 1980 hockey with the shot of the Russian player kneeling while the celebration was going on.  Not sure I captured anything close to it but I still like the contrast between the celebration and the let down of losing.  Both of these shots were through the glass:
